Mapping out freckles: How to get it right
Whether freckles look natural is not decided during the pigmentation. It is decided beforehand, during the mapping. What is wrong there cannot be saved even by the cleanest technique.
Why mapping is so important
During pigmentation, you are only executing what you planned beforehand. Mapping is the moment when you can still change everything: remove a dot, balance one side, reduce the density.
It is also the moment when your client can have a say. She sees in the mirror what she is getting before anything is in the skin.
This is how real freckles are distributed
Look closely at faces with natural freckles. You will always see the same thing:
- They are densest over the bridge of the nose and on the cheeks.
- Towards the sides, there are fewer, they fade out.
- No two dots are the same size.
- The distances are irregular.
Exactly this disorder you have to plan. That sounds contradictory, but it is the core of the technique.
The three things that matter
Distribution
First, determine where the focus is and where the freckles end. Only after that do the individual dots come.
Density
Better to start with less. You can always add more during the touch-up after six to eight weeks. Removing is significantly more difficult.
Symmetry
Both halves of the face should be equally weighted, but not mirrored. If the same pattern is on the left and right, you can immediately see that it is fake.
The most common mistakes
- The stamped pattern. Same size, same distance. That is the mistake by which fake freckles are recognized the fastest.
- Too much at once. Whoever sets the full density at the first appointment has no room for maneuver left.
- Working without a mirror. Show your client the mapping while sitting. A face looks different when lying down.
Styles: from subtle to bold
Freckles come in soft and intense and in different sizes. Which style is suitable depends on the skin type, the facial features, and the client's wish. The mapping remains the same work, only the density and size of the dots change.
This is how you practice mapping
You do not learn mapping on the first model, but beforehand on paper. With practice sheets, you train the distribution and density until your hand no longer falls into uniform distances. After that comes the practice on latex skin.
In the Mapping Masterclass, we go through anatomy, mapping, and the different styles step by step. Mapping sheets and practice exercises are included.
Frequently asked questions
How long does mapping take?
That depends on the scope. Take the time it takes. Every minute here saves you corrections later.
Can I learn mapping alone?
The basics, yes, with practice sheets and instructions. For the complete treatment, you additionally need skin and pigment theory and clean work. That belongs in a training.
Which pigments are suitable for this?
That is in the post Mixing Freckles Pigments.
